I cannot leave two letters unchallenged from writers who complained about the paper’s supposed “left-leaning” approach to news.
One letter writer (“Left-leaning reading results in left-leaning readership,” July 17) says the paper and other media outlets have spent a decade “spewing disinformation and outright lies” about the conservative side and ignoring President Biden’s aging. The paper has done an admirable job reporting facts about Donald Trump, including his thousands of lies about everything from his winning the 2020 election to lying about his own health and reporting on Joe Biden’s obvious aging problems. Another writer claimed widespread fraud in national voting, necessitating a voter ID law.
Let’s put these arguments to rest once and for all. Joe Biden served as our 46th president. Every single one of the dozens of lawsuits filed by the national GOP challenging the results of the election were dismissed or thrown out by every court, including the Supreme Court.
The Maine GOP asked Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows to investigate 51 alleged instances of individuals voting twice in the 2024 election. On July 17, Bellows said the following: “Mainers can be reassured that following a thorough investigation, my office has confirmed that none of the 51 names provided by the Maine GOP had voted twice in the same election.”
The Maine GOP’s allegations were false. End of story. We can debate policy and approaches to governing but base it on facts, not fanciful “beliefs” full of well-circulated lies.
