I attended the Hyde School for eighth and ninth grade at the Woodstock, Connecticut, campus. Hyde School fell short of its obligation to me to provide a safe and positive environment for learning. Students, including myself, were routinely subjected to extreme situations meant to inflict extreme psychological and physical distress. The Hyde School routinely implemented Stasi-style tactics from East Germany to elicit “confessions” for the most minor of “ethics violations.” Punishment for alleged wrongdoings was cruel, and would not pass the “smell test” in any honest evaluation of the program.

I am grateful to survivors of the Hyde School program coming forward with their testimony and experiences. Many of the recent letters sent in support of the school are from people well connected in the upper echelons of the Hyde School (former staff, influential donors, etc.).

I remember my time at the school as a negative experience. It is a trauma many survivors share and finally now have the chance to share publicly. I encourage others to share their experiences on the program and maybe find some peace. As Hyde School always preached, “If the shoe fits, wear it!”
