One person was killed and another seriously injured in a head-on crash in Alton on Tuesday morning, officials said.

Maine State Police responded to the wreck on Route 16 near Alton Grocery at about 10 a.m., police spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release.

The department’s preliminary investigation indicated that Matthew Parsons, 42, of LaGrange, was driving south and crossed the center line, striking the vehicle of Peter McCormack, 70, of Alton, who was traveling north.

Parsons was pronounced dead at the scene. McCormack was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with injuries that police considered life-threatening, Moss said.

The investigation is ongoing, Moss said. The affected area of Route 16 was closed for several hours while the scene was cleared.
