A South Paris man died Saturday after he was struck and killed by a projectile discharged by a mini cannon during a private fireworks display in Roxbury.

Joseph Hennessey, 41, was pronounced dead after being taken from the scene by emergency medical services, according to a release by Shannon Moss, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

At about 9:24 p.m. on Saturday the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, MedCare Ambulance Service, and Roxbury Fire Department were called to a residence in the town of Roxbury for the report of an individual who had collapsed at a gathering during a private fireworks display, the release said.

The Office of State Fire Marshal and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit subsequently responded to assist with the investigation.

An autopsy of the victim was conducted at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta.

“Initial findings in the investigation indicate that Mr. Hennessey was struck and killed by a projectile discharged by a mini cannon at the time of the fireworks display,” Moss wrote. “This incident remains under active investigation by the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit.”

Injuries from fireworks in Maine are not uncommon. A fireworks show July 5 at Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry injured three members of the pyrotechnics crew. In March, a Lewiston man was injured when he set off fireworks inside his apartment.
