Justice Darcie McElwee’s rise to power says everything about how corrupt this state has become under Gov. Janet Mills.
McElwee was terminated by one administration and immediately embraced by another — not because she fought for justice, but because she didn’t. As District of Maine’s chief federal law enforcement officer, she never exposed the failures under Mills. And now she’s rewarded with a black robe and a judge’s seat. That’s not justice. That’s payback for loyalty.
I do not trust McElwee’s appointment to the state Superior Court or anything else that Gov. Mills does. I believe this nomination was purely political, purely strategic and deeply dishonest to the people of Maine. And if those two think the public isn’t watching, they’re mistaken. There are still some of us who know the difference between earning power and being handed it as a favor. We see them.
