Mainers spoke clearly when they signed the petition to bring forward voter ID requirements for Maine. The sheer volume of signatures that were collected demonstrates that Maine people want this. Thirty-six states have voter ID laws. It is a clear and common-sense way to ensure the integrity of our elections.
When traveling, I often want to learn about a country’s politics, how they vote and what is important to them. I found folks have been very surprised that we don’t have to show an ID to vote here in Maine. The first thing they ask is, “How do you know it is them?”
Requiring identification at the polls is not about excluding anyone. It’s about protecting every citizen’s vote from fraud. Just like I need to show my ID to open a bank account, cash a check, drive, even for some medical appointments. Some prescription medications also require showing my ID. I think it is a reasonable expectation to have the same standard when voting.
With voter ID we can protect voting rights and safeguard our elections at the same time. How is this not a win for everyone? I support having to show my ID to vote, and invite you to vote “Yes” with me on Nov. 4.
