Maine game wardens and first responders from multiple agencies rescued a man who was seriously injured when he fell from a ledge in the area of Screw Auger Falls in Grafton Township on Wednesday afternoon.

Brexton Getchell, 21, of Unity, fell 25-30 feet and landed in the water, sustaining serious injuries, Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife spokesperson Mark Latti said in an emailed statement Wednesday night.

Due to the challenging terrain, rescuers carried Getchell through the water to a point approximately 300 feet downstream, where he was eventually transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter.

A spokesperson for the hospital said Thursday afternoon that Getchell was in fair condition.

In addition to Maine game wardens, members of the Mahoosuc Mountain Search and Rescue Team, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Bethel Fire and Rescue, Newry Fire Department, Maine Department of Transportation and LifeFlight of Maine also responded to the waterfall in Grafton Notch to assist in the technical rescue.
