After a recent Hallowell City Council meeting, I am fully convinced the majority of Hallowell city councilors have lost focus on Hallowell taxpayers. Last year they voted in an outrageous 20 to 27% tax increase. This resulted in a very angry response from taxpayers. The City Council promised to reduce taxes by 10% this coming year but unfortunately it came up well short and only reduced taxes 5%.
The councilors no longer consider the many retirees, living on a fixed income, low-income homeowners or first-time homeowners. They turned a deaf ear to the many citizens who offered concrete budget reduction ideas.
It makes me so sad to see the City Council ignore the beleaguered Hallowell taxpayers.
