Milton H. Gerard

AUGUSTA – Milton H. Gerard, passed away on August 30, 2025, at the Maine Veterans’ Home after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born in Portland on Sept. 5, 1942.

Milt overcame a childhood marked by foster care and poverty to rise to the highest levels of both his military and law enforcement careers. He will be remembered as a devoted public servant and a kind and empathetic man.

Milt dedicated his life to service. He spent 34 years in the armed forces, beginning in the Army National Guard Reserve while a junior in high school and then serving as a U.S. Navy corpsman attached to the Marine Corps. He later enlisted in the Maine Army National Guard, where he attained the rank of Command Sergeant Major.

While still serving in the National Guard, Milt served 23 years with the Augusta Police Department, retiring as Deputy Police Chief.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Milt cherished time with his family. Some of his happiest memories were made traveling and camping with his wife and children, including a three‑month journey across the United States, visiting national parks and historic sites.
