A car crashed into and drove through a busy Brunswick tennis club Thursday morning, resulting in only minor injuries, police said.

The car drove into Maine Pines Racquet and Fitness, a private tennis and fitness club on Harpswell Road in Brunswick, at around 9:40 a.m. Thursday, traveling about 200 feet through the open sports complex, Brunswick police said in a statement.

The car “crashed through an outside wall and then sped across four active tennis courts before driving through the lobby and then into another room where it finally came to rest,” the statement said.

There were only two minor injuries, to the driver, a 72-year-old woman from Gray, and to a bystander, who was hit by a piece of flying glass. Both were taken to Mid Coast Hospital.

The car, a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, was totaled.

Officials did not say whether any charges were filed or if they are investigating the cause of the crash, and did not respond to a call Thursday night for more details.

The building had to be closed because of the damage, and it was difficult for emergency personnel to extract the vehicle from the space, police said.

Maine Pines Racquet and Fitness announced in a Facebook post that it would be closed for a few days to, “assess, clean up and make repairs as there’s been extensive damage, particularly to the aerobics studio.”

“We hope to reopen very soon and will keep our member community informed,” the post states. “We are grateful for all of the first responders who assisted us.”
