Baxter State Park is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the individual or individuals who carved initials into the sign at the summit of Mount Katahdin.

Park officials reported the “act of vandalism” in a social media post Thursday.

The letters “H.M.” and “J.M” were carved into the middle of the Baxter Peak sign on Katahdin, which marks the 5,268-foot summit of Baxter Peak and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.

“Did you witness the act? Have you observed any social media posts from the individual(s) responsible, or heard any other discussions related to this?” the post asks.

In response to the state park’s post, members of a Facebook group for Appalachian Trail hikers have shared photos of themselves and other members posing next to the sign on recent hikes — some with and some without the initials. Others chimed in with their experiences, and they are suggesting it likely occurred sometime in late August.

According to photos posted by summiters in a Baxter State Park Facebook group, the initials were carved into the sign on or before Aug. 28.

Anyone with information is asked to call the state park’s headquarters at 207-723-5140.
