Thornton Academy, Portland and Bonny Eagle were close in last week’s Varsity Maine football poll, when only eight points separated the first-place Golden Trojans from No. 3 Bonny Eagle.

That was cozy compared to this week. Portland has taken over No. 1, two points ahead of No. 2 Bonny Eagle and three points more than No. 3 Thornton. The first showdown of the Big 3 is next week when Portland hosts Thornton on Oct. 3. But first, all three squads face tough matchups this weekend.

Kennebunk and Cony remain fourth and fifth, respectively. Oxford Hills and Gardiner are this week’s newcomers.

The Varsity Maine football poll is based on games played before Sept. 23, 2025. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.
