Brown University is planning to return a collection of artifacts to the Wabanaki Nations.

The artifacts, currently held at the Rhode Island-based university’s Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, include blades, hammerstones, hoes, mortars and pestles, according to a notice filed Monday under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

“These items were removed from multiple burials from at least nine locations in Maine,” the notice states, with many being excavated in the early 20th century.

The objects “are reasonably believed to have been placed intentionally with or near human remains,” the notice states.

The artifacts may be repatriated on or after Oct. 29.

Earlier this month, the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor began working to repatriate items to the Wabanaki Nations that had been missing from its collection for decades, including a human tooth and 16 funerary items.
