We write this letter, on behalf of the Portland Education Association Executive Board, in response to the event that took place at one of our elementary schools recently: A parent was detained by agents in an unmarked vehicle on school property during morning drop-off.

Our schools should be safe places where students can focus on learning and engagement with their peers, instead of worrying that a classmate or a parent will get arrested on school grounds.

There are carefully marked speed zones in and around schools. There are restrictions on locating certain types of businesses near schools. Within our schools, doors are locked and visitors are monitored. We have security cameras and practice safety drills with students regularly to prepare for various emergencies.

Our schools should be safe places. They are not.

We write with an appeal to the Greater Portland community. We have made every effort to keep the agents out and establish our schools as safe. We cannot do this alone. We need help.

Federal agents invaded our school grounds. This will keep happening. There is no way to tell where or when this will happen next. We must all demand answers, information and assistance from our city and town councils and state representatives.

We can no longer fight this battle alone. We are stronger together. We urge people to please arm themselves with information. Please speak up. Please help us to protect our students and our public schools.
