SKOWHEGAN — A Madison man was sentenced this week to serve at least two years behind bars for stabbing his elderly landlord.
Superior Court Chief Justice Robert E. Mullen handed down the sentence of six years in prison, with all but two years suspended, and three years of probation to Daniel Nordin, 60, during a hearing Wednesday morning at Skowhegan District Court.
A Somerset County jury found Nordin guilty of one Class B count of aggravated assault after a one-day trial.
As conditions of Nordin’s probation, he is to have no contact with his former landlord, not possess firearms or dangerous weapons and submit to random searches for such items and complete evaluation and treatment for psychiatric or psychological issues, according to court records.
The partially suspended sentence means if Nordin violates those conditions, he could be ordered to serve the remaining years of the prison sentence.
The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office arrested Nordin Nov. 21, 2024, after responding to the stabbing at 12 Heald St. in Madison.
Detective David Cole wrote in an affidavit at the time that Nordin called to report he stabbed his landlord, who was then 82.
The landlord suffered stab wounds to his hand and stomach, according to court records. The injuries were not considered life-threatening, Sheriff Dale Lancaster said at the time.
Cole’s affidavit states the landlord had notified Nordin prior that he and an exterminator would need to enter Nordin’s apartment to do work related to bed bugs in the apartment complex.
After knocking on Nordin’s door, the landlord reported he tried to open it using his key, and Nordin pushed the door shut, Cole wrote. When the landlord tried opening the door again, Nordin stabbed him.
Nordin told deputies he had stabbed the landlord and provided them with the knives he used, the affidavit says.
After his arrest, Nordin was held at the Somerset County Jail until his trial. His bail had been set at $5,000 cash, court records show.
A grand jury indicted him on the felony-level charge in February, and Nordin pleaded not guilty.
Court records indicate Nordin refused to sign and complete the paperwork regarding his sentence and probation.
