Charles Armstrong’s Oct. 1 letter, about referendum Question 2, states that “firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens, and the leading cause of suicide death in Maine.” That’s like saying automobiles are the leading cause of deaths in car crashes.
Firearms don’t shoot themselves any more than cars drive themselves. This has nothing to do with the firearms or cars — it’s about the individuals who use them.
If Question 2 passes, it will get abused just like a protection order: Someone files for a protection order without due cause and the person they file against isn’t given a chance to defend themself.
For years, the state and government have been trying to disarm citizens but have failed. Now they are coming at it a different way, slowly taking away our gun rights, as with Question 2. It’s just a matter of time before owning firearms is illegal.
