Peter Dennett Quimby
AUGUSTA – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Dennett Quimby on Sept. 25, 2025, after a long illness.
Peter was born in Augusta on Oct. 1, 1946, to Preston and Marguerite Quimby. Growing up in Augusta, he graduated from Cony High School in the Class of 1964.
After working for a year, he attended the University of Maine at Orono from 1965 to 1969, where he graduated with a BA in English. Peter then joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany, serving from 1969 to 1971. He received a Good Conduct medal and a National Defense Service medal.
Upon his discharge from the Army, he returned to the States and began a career in social work for the Maine Department of Health & Welfare, where he worked for 16 and a half years before retiring due to health issues. While working, Peter also went on to earn a second BA in Public Administration from the University of Maine at Augusta.
In 1974 Peter married Janice Knowles. Peter and Jan celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on June 8, 2025.
In his retirement, Peter spent much of his time working on old buildings on the family farm. It was sometimes said, “If Grampa can’t fix it, no one can.”
In his spare time, Peter enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, antique cars, tinkering with his 1953 Ford tractor, trips to the coast, and (in Jan’s words), “riding the roads looking for bargains.” Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.
He is affectionately remembered for his numerous witty sayings: “I’m not as dumb as you look”; “I don’t care, and it don’t matter”; “This is my story and I’m telling it”; “Would I lie to you?”
Peter leaves behind his wife, Janice; son, Ames and daughter-in-law Becky, daughter, Camden and son-in-law Seth Sherwood. Peter also leaves behind six grandchildren, Harrison, Natalie, and Conner Quimby, Aiden Sherwood and his wife Adalia, Caleb, and Claire Sherwood. He is survived by two cousins, Isadora and Charles Quimby; as well as two special grand-dogs, Chewy and Marlowe.
At Peter’s request, there will be no funeral service.
