This time, the Black Bears left no doubt.
The University of Maine erupted for a 34-point first-half lead and rolled to a 34-14 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Bryant on Saturday in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
Quarterback Carter Peevy was 23 for 36 passing for 338 yards and three touchdowns, receiver Scott Woods had five catches for 103 yards and two TDs – all in the first half – as Maine improved to 2-4 overall, 2-1 in the CAA. Bryant (2-3, 0-3) was outgained 361-92 in the first half and 421-253 for the game.
Peevy’s 66-yard pass to Scott Woods on Maine’s fifth offensive play of the game put the Black Bears on the board, and Samuel Tremblay’s 29-yard field goal with 8:54 left in the first pushed it to 10-0.
A 40-yard punt return from Woods set Maine up at the Bryant 20, and two plays later Trevin Ewing’s 15-yard rush pushed Maine’s lead to 17-0.
Peevy found Nick Laughlin of Cape Elizabeth for a 64-yard score with 9:18 left in the second quarter, Tremblay kicked a 33-yarder with 3:44 left, and Peevy and Woods connected again – this time from 14 yards out – with 34 seconds left in the half for a 34-0 lead.
Bryant got on the board on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 12-yard rush from Jaden Keefner, who also added a 6-yard scoring run with 1:40 left.
Maine plays Merrimack on Oct. 11 in North Andover, Massachusetts.
ENDICOTT 53, UNE 14: The Gulls amassed 536 yards of total offense with Markys Bridgewater (130 yards rushing) and Bryan Ferreira (109) each scoring two touchdowns, and rolled to a win over the University of New England at Beverly, Massachusetts.
Endicott improved to 4-1, 2-0 in the Conference of New England, while the Nor’easters (4-1, 1-1) suffered their first loss.
The Gulls opened a 27-0 lead by halftime, powered by a 1-yard plunge by Ferreira in the first quarter, followed by three scores in span of 4:26 – a 10-yard fumble recovery return by Caleb Luz, Shea Lynch’s 8-yard pass to Jayson Little and a 7-yard run by Bridgewater.
Bridgewater’s 23-yard scoring run pushed the score to 34-0 before UNE got on the board with a 6-yard rush from Nathan Delgado, but a failed 2-point attempt kept it at 34-6.
Ferreira’s 5-yard run to end the third quarter made it 41-6.
Lang connected with Berto Zepeda early in the fourth of UNE, but WNE answered just 52 seconds later with Nick Stinson’s 57-yard pass to Ryan Boyce for a 53-14 lead.
Delgado finished with 72 yards of 14 carries for UNE while John Germano had six catches for 69 yards.
WILLIAMS 35, BOWDOIN 17: Jon Oris rushed for 144 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown, while Owen Johansen rushed for two scores and passed for two more as Williams rolled to a win Saturday in Brunswick.
Williams (3-1) took the game’s first possession 74 yards, capped by a 17-yard run by Oris for a 7-0 lead. Hanry Machnik’s 14-yard reception from Johansen on the first play of the second quarter pushed the lead to 14-0. Johansen’s 15-yard run pushed the Williams lead to 21-3 at the half.
Johansen’s 1-yard rush and his 39-yard pass to Zach Falls pushed the third-quarter lead to 35-3.
The Polar Bears (0-4) scored twice in the final 6:38 left. Michael Wolfendale connected with Ty Connolly for a 21-yard touchdown, then Nolan Wilbricht hauled in a 4-yard scoring pass from Peter Macauley.
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 35, HUSSON 10: Paul Gorry was 18 of 26 passing for 238 yards and two touchdowns as Western New England University cruised by the Eagles in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Husson (1-4) capped the game’s first drive with Garrett Martin’s 35-yard field goal and the Golden Bears (3-2) followed with a 10-play drive with Matt LaMontagne scoring on a 2-yard run. LaMontagne’s 3-yard scoring run early in the second quarter pushed the lead to 14-3 before his third TD, this from 1-yard out, just pushed the WNE lead to 21-3.
Husson got one back just before the half with Max Clark’s 13-yard scoring pass to Cam Holmes pushing the score to 21-10 at the break.
The Eagles extended the lead in the second half with Gorry threw two tocuhdowns (18 and 40 yards) to De’Andre Harris.
For the Eagles, Jed Lober rushed for 85 yards on 22 carries.
NICHOLS 49, MAINE MARITIME 20: Ian Snow passed for 223 yards and three touchdowns to lift the Bisons (1-3) past the Mariners (0-3) in Castine.
Auston Harris rushed 154 yards and a touchdown, while Nyrel Norris had 92 rushing yards and a touchdown for MMA.
