The Maine high school golf state championships are later this week and conferences throughout the state either recently completed their state tournament qualifiers or will be playing 18 holes Monday or Tuesday for a chance to qualify for the state tournament.
At last week’s Western Maine Conference qualifier, Yarmouth (325), Fryeburg (327), Freeport (329), Lake Region (332), Wells (337) and York (340) earned spots in Friday’s Class B championship at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.
“I think any of the six can definitely win it,” Yarmouth coach Dave Cox said of the WMC teams that qualified. “But the last couple of years, it’s been the northern teams, the teams outside of our conference that have won. The top three teams were all outside of the Western Maine Conference. So I think it’s going to be very competitive, and it just all depends on who has a good day.”
Gardiner of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference won the Class B title in 2024.
The Clippers have had an outstanding season, going 13-0 during regular-season matches. Six different players have been medalists.
Cox said he’s trying to keep things as normal as possible leading up to the state tournament.
“Well, we still have the Western Maine (Conference) championship,” Cox said. “They have a season-ending nine-hole tournament, so we’re going to go to that on Monday. Then we are just going to work on green speed and short game stuff. But I don’t think we’ll do anything more than what we’ve been doing from week to week.”
Three Penobscot Valley Conference teams qualified for the Class B tournament: Presque Isle (328), Hermon (357) and John Bapst (362).
Six PVC teams will travel to Vassalboro on Saturday for a chance at the Class C title. Calais (314) won the qualifier, while Dexter (317) came in second. Houlton (330) and Narraguagus (330) were in third. Mattanawcook (341) was fifth followed by Fort Kent (358).
Forest Hills (356) was the only East-West Conference team to qualify for the Class C championship. Hodgdon (355) and Central Aroostook (361) earned their way to the state tournament through the Aroostook League qualifier, and North Yarmouth Academy (346) secured a spot by placing first in the WMC qualifier.
The Mountain Valley Conference and the Southern Maine Athletic Association will play their state qualifiers Monday at Natanis, and the KVAC qualifier is the following day at the same course.
Young core leading Camden Hills girls soccer

Midway through the season, coach Meredith Messer said the Camden Hills girls soccer team is coming into form after reaching the Class A North final in 2024.
“We have a lot of young players this year, and so they’re starting to hit their stride and working together with the older players,” Messer said.
Sophomore Molly Williams, who scored 32 goals in 2024, is on another torrid pace this fall, racking up 23 goals and eight assists as of Wednesday.
“She’s really talented, and she’s really focused, and she has a passion for the game,” Messer said.
Eve Domareki is another high-scoring sophomore for the Windjammers. She has 15 goals and five assists. Her younger sister, freshman Liv Domareki, is third on the team in scoring with seven goals and four assists.
“I think Liv’s a little bit of a different player than Molly is,” Messer said. “Liv likes the defensive work, and the goals are kind of like icing on the cake for her. So she’s doing a nice job figuring out how to play our midfield formation and come back defensively and provide some really amazing support that way.”
Former soccer players providing kick to Lewiston cross country team
Lewiston cross country coach Craig Johns said three former soccer players are helping fuel the girls team’s success this fall.
Crew Langley won (23:29.3) at the Gardiner meet and also finished third (25:09.2) at the Mt. Ararat race on Sept. 11. Earlier in the season, she took eighth (24:38.9) at Edward Little on Sept. 4.
Gabby Roy has two top 10 finishes: eighth (28:26.7) at Mt. Ararat and 10th (27:26.7) at Gardiner. Lexus Keene placed eighth (27:16.7) at Gardiner. Langeley, Roy, and Keene are all seniors
“They wanted to do something different and they brought so much good energy to the team,” Johns said. They’re fun to be with. They like working out, they work hard and I’m just sorry that I only have them for one season.”
