Gov. Janet Mills has indicated that she will decide in November whether to run against Sen. Susan Collins. I believe that Mills has served our state with thoughtfulness and integrity both as attorney general and governor. She has been an attentive and good leader.
But it is time to hand over the reins. Younger leaders need a chance to step up and take over, to bring fresh energy and new ideas. There are candidates looking to do just that, and we should encourage them.
I fervently hope that Gov. Mills will take a well-deserved victory lap and let her final legacy be one of grace and generativity, manifest by full-throated support for the next generation of our state’s leaders.
