Editor’s note (Oct. 7, 2025): By the time this letter was posted, the funding in question was restored.
In response to your Sept. 24 article on the cancellation of Veterans Upward Bound at the University of Southern Maine, I want to voice my strong support for maintaining this vital program.
As the daughter, niece, sister and aunt of veterans, I know the sacrifices our service members and their families make. One way we honor that service is by ensuring access to education. The Trump administration’s decision to cancel Veterans Upward Bound at the University of Southern Maine is so disturbing.
This program has changed lives. It helped disabled veteran Edward Philbrook, once homeless, gain the skills and confidence to return to school. Today he’s thriving at the University of Maine at Augusta. USM’s program serves 125 veterans, with more waiting, and 80% of participants complete college — well above the national average.
Cutting this funding takes away opportunity from those who answered the call to serve our nation. Our veterans gave us their best. The least we can do is give them the chance to build a better future. I urge everyone to call or write to our legislators.
