Absentee voting is essential to a large portion of Maine’s population: seniors and Mainers with chronic health problems that prevent them from driving or going to the polls. Making absentee voting more difficult will jeopardize the ability of these Mainers to vote.

I speak from experience. My mother-in-law had severe COPD and could no longer drive or do activities that many of us take for granted. She was unable to walk farther than from the house to a car. Changing absentee voter rules in Maine would make it unnecessarily difficult because she would no longer be able to request an absentee ballot by phone.

Additionally, implementing the new rules in Question 1 will increase taxpayer expense. We need to cut taxes, not increase them.

Don’t break something that isn’t broken. Vote “No” on Question 1 this Nov. 4.
