Some Maine Democrats are celebrating that Rep. Jared Golden faces a primary challenge. They’re making a dangerous mistake.

Available polling shows Golden narrowly beating Paul LePage, while his challenger, Matt Dunlap, loses by 10 points. If Golden loses the primary, Paul LePage will represent Maine’s 2nd Congressional District.

I disagree with Golden on many issues. But on questions like voter ID, most CD2 constituents agree with him, not us. Meanwhile, national Republicans are salivating at the chance to face Dunlap instead of Golden.

Stopping President Trump’s assault on democracy requires winning the House. That means holding pro-Trump districts like CD2 — not by nominating candidates who look like Portland liberals, but by letting CD2 voters nominate the candidate they’ve elected four times.

Southern Maine Democrats have outsized influence in CD2 primaries. If we tip the scales against Golden, we’ll lose our best chance to halt Trump’s power grab.
