Quarterback Carter Peevy scored on a 2-yard run with 6:49 left, breaking a tie and propelling Maine to a 20-13 football win over Merrimack on Saturday at North Andover, Massachusetts.

The Black Bears improved to 3-4 with their third straight win. Merrimack is also 3-4.

Peevy was 12 of 25 passing for 159 yards, but it was Maine’s depth at running back that proved crucial, as third-stringer Rashawn Marshall rushed for 146 yards on 19 carries.

Maine starter Sincere Baines carried the ball only two times for minus-2 yards and did not return after the first series. Cape Elizabeth native Nick Laughlin was injured on a touchdown run in the first quarter and was out of uniform with ice on his knee by the time Maine got the ball back.

A roughing-the-kicker penalty on fourth down extended Merrimack’s first drive of the game, which was capped by a missed 47-yard field-goal attempt by Carlton Thai. Maine took over at its own 29, and Laughlin had runs of 25 and 18 yards before plunging in from the 1 with 5:15 left in the first quarter.

Merrimack came right back with an eight-play, 81-yard drive, as Ayden Pereira connected with Seth Sweitzer for a 26-yard touchdown.

Two penalties halted Maine’s momentum on a drive early in the second quarter, but Samuel Tremblay put the Black Bears back in front with a 39-yard field goal. Thai kicked a 46-yarder for Merrimack with 4:02 left in the first half.

Tremblay gave Maine a 13-10 lead with a career-long 45-yard field goal 33 seconds before halftime, then the Black Bears blocked a 50-yard attempt by Thai on the final play of the half.

Thai’s 34-yard field goal with 7:50 remaining in the third tied the game again. Later in the third, Maine had first-and-goal at the 6, but the Warriors came up with a defensive stand, and Peevy threw incomplete on fourth down from the 2.

BATES 35, TUFTS 28: Ryan Lynskey scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a 24-yard run with 58 seconds remaining, and the Bobcats (2-3) rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Jumbos (2-3) in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Lynskey finished with 221 yards on 32 carries. His third touchdown was a 2-yard run with 4:21 remaining, but the potential tying extra point was blocked, leaving Tufts with a 28-27 lead.

Bates quickly got the ball back after a three-and-out, however, then drove 59 yards in eight plays.

Major Spencer III clinched the victory with an interception.

The Bobcats’ first touchdown was a 9-yard pass from Jack Perry to Matthew Holmes that tied the game at 7-7. Lynskey twice put Bates ahead in the first half, with TD runs of 17 and 4 yards, but Tufts answered both times to make it 21-21 at halftime.

AMHERST 34, BOWDOIN 7: Amherst scored 34 unanswered points and rolled to a NESCAC win at Brunswick.

An interception by Max Oenning set up Bowdoin (0-5) at the Amherst 17, and three plays later Peter Macauley scored on a 4-yard run with 12:41 left in the second quarter.

But the Mammoths (4-1) answered quickly and didn’t stop. Starting at the Bowdoin 40 after Carter Jung’s 54-yard kickoff return, Amherst needed just four plays to score on Marek Hill’s 5-yard run.

A 29-yard field goal from Hudson Fulcher-Melendy about 10 minutes later gave Amherst a 10-7 lead. Fulcher-Melendy hit another from 19 yards with 3:32 left in the third quarter, and the Mammoths added three touchdowns in the fourth. Demetrius Smith scored on a 5-yard run, and Hill connected with Jung on scoring passes of 62 and 35 yards.

WESLEYAN 24, COLBY 7: Matt Fitzsimmons completed 22 of 32 passes for 258 yards and accounted for three touchdowns as the Cardinals (4-1) beat the Mules (2-3) at Waterville.

Wesleyan went up 7-0 with a 14-play, 80-yard drive, with Fitzsimmons scoring on a 3-yard run on the final play of the first quarter. Gage Hammond’s 34-yard field goal extended the lead to 10-0.

The Cardinals pushed it to 17-0 with a nine-play, 64-yard drive, as Fitzsimmons tossed a 4-yard TD pass to Blake Newcomb.

Colby got on the scoreboard with 7:12 left on a 37-yard run by Antone Moreis. The Mules failed to recover an ensuing onside kick, and the Cardinals went 53 yards for another score, with Fitzsimmons hitting Donte Kelly for a 5-yard TD.

CURRY 60, MAINE MARITIME 0: Anthony Santino passed for three touchdowns in the first half, and the Colonels (4-1, 2-0 Conference of New England) rolled past the Mariners (0-5, 0-2) in Milton, Massachusetts.
