VASSALBORO — For the first time in nearly 30 years, North Yarmouth Academy is a golf state champion.

NYA won its first Class C title since 1996 on Saturday, finishing with a score of 333 on Natanis Golf Course’s Arrowhead side.

Monmouth/Hall-Dale and Winthrop tied for second at 338, Dexter was fourth (342) and Fort Kent fifth (343).

“The school has one (the title) before, but it’s been a long time, and far longer than any of these kids have been around,” said NYA coach Charlie Hudson. “It’s an exciting achievement.

Winthrop freshman Drew Mertzel of Winthrop won the individual boys championship with a 3-over 75.

“I’m happy with it,” said Mertzel, who shot a 3-under 69 at the Mountain Valley Conference championships and 70 at the MVC qualifier. “There were some ups and downs. I didn’t start great, but it ended well.

Addison Beaudoin of Monmouth/Hall-Dale won the girls title with a 15-over 87, followed by Kay Allarie (90) of Winthrop and Charlotte Dube (94) of Penobscot Valley.

Beaudoin, a senior, battled nerves throughout her round.

“I knew that I just had to focus on every shot and make sure to hit it clean,” Beaudoin said. “I just tried to stay calm and not get negative, and I only had one bad shot.”

Sawyer Herbert of NYA finished second among boys with a 5-over 77. He had early success with back-to-back birdies on the third and fourth holes.

“I felt pretty good,” Hebert said. “I got all of my tee shots in (the fairways). That was pretty much all I wanted today, that was the goal.

“The greens were hard and fast. That short par 5 (on No. 4 was great). I almost eagled and just missed (the putt), barely, and ended up (with a birdie). It was really good.”

Maddox Cuddy of Forest Hills and Isiah Barrett of Machias tied for third at 78.

Along with Hebert’s 77 for NYA, Deagan Nadeau shot 83, followed by Matt Mott (85) and Cam Gardiner (88).

“We had a good day,” Hudson said. “I’m pleased. A couple of the veterans had some rough holes and were upset with themselves, but the kids came through. Our top two (golfers) have been on the team for three years and have been very consistent. Our No. 3 had one bad hole but put in a good score.

“I’m thrilled (with Hebert). That’s the best he’s played here before. He’s been close before, but he’s been in the top five.”
