As I read Jim Fossel’s Sept. 14 column (“A good federal budget is not an omnibus budget“), I once again grow weary of a misleading statement too often promoted by the president and his supporters: “…more than half the country voted for Trump…” That is not correct.
Trump, of course, won the Electoral College and he got very close to “…more than half…” but more than 50% of those voting in 2024 preferred another candidate. The same was true in 2016 and 2020 — when the president received 46.2% and 46.8%, respectively.
Sadly, the country remains very divided politically, which leads me to believe the president does not have a mandate to govern in the way he is doing so.
