The originators of referendum Question 1 (pertaining to absentee voting and a voter ID requirement) have many pernicious goals, foremost, under the cynical guise of voting security, the hidden but obvious attempt to tip results to the right.
We should know of one effect of Question 1 that is not commonly mentioned. The Legislature’s roll-out of ongoing absentee voter status is not complete. Currently, only seniors (and self-identified disabled people) can become ongoing (permanent) absentee voters in Maine. But the law removes that restriction as of Dec. 31, 2025, when any voter may become an ongoing absentee voter. That is, unless Question 1 passes. Question 1 is bad for democracy and bad for Maine.
