TOPSHAM — The matchup was thrilling but the result was not.
Skowhegan and Mt. Ararat’s Class A North field hockey battle ended in a 2-2 draw Monday night after two overtimes.
Grace Mayo scored both goals for the visiting River Hawks, ranked second in the Varsity Maine poll, while Maddy Sweet and Krystah Coen each tied the game for the Eagles during the first and third quarters.
Both keepers made key stops down the stretch to keep the game tied. With about 1:20 left in regulation, Skowhegan freshman Michelle Williams (two saves) prevented Addison Chubbuck’s one-on-one breakaway. Less than 15 seconds into the first overtime, Mt. Ararat sophomore Jaymie Bergman (three saves) hand-blocked Kaitlyn Dufour’s clean shot.
No goals were scored in the final 40:04 of play. Both teams had two penalty corner attempts in the final 16 minutes.
“We couldn’t finish today, and we usually do,” Skowhegan coach Paula Doughty said. “You know, the other Friday night (in a 5-0 win over Edward Little), we just couldn’t stop finishing. But they’re kids and it’s not professional field hockey … Mt. Ararat is a wonderful team. There’s no two ways about it … Just one of those days.”
This was the second tie game of the season for both teams. Skowhegan (10-0-2) tied with Lewiston on Sept. 29, also a 2-2 finish, while Mt. Ararat (8-2-2) played a 3-3 draw against Hampden Academy in the opener.
“Of course it gives us confidence,” Mt. Ararat coach Krista Chase said while applauding her young team’s growth during the season. “You know, not many people tie Skowhegan, or beat them, so we will definitely take that as a positive.”
With 13:23 left in the first quarter, Mayo gave the River Hawks an early lead with a shot from the top of the circle.
“We noticed that their defense was pretty far right,” said the senior captain. “So we just passed left, and I saw space in front of me, so I shot it as hard as I could.”
Sweet tied the game for the Eagles with a goal from the lower left side 41 seconds later.
Skowhegan attempted 11 penalty corners but converted just once. With 12:37 left in the second, Faith Pease inserted the ball to Charlotte Haynie before swinging it to Mayo.
Mt. Ararat scored once on its six corner attempts. With 9:04 left in the third, Coen inserted the ball to Kamryn Chase, who sent a pass back to the left corner for Coen to tap in.
Kamryn Chase said Saturday’s 2-1 double-overtime win over No. 6 Freeport helped Mt. Ararat stay focused during Monday’s tight overtime matchup.
“They’re both obviously high-level teams, and I think we just kept our composure,” Chase said. “We didn’t let their breakaways get to us. We just we played our game, and we just used our space in overtime. … We just kept our positive mindset.”
