The Masterstroke Queen Experience

8 p.m. Oct. 30. Portland House of Music, 25 Temple St., Portland, $15 in advance, $20 at the door, 21-plus. statetheatreportland.com.

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? It’s both! The Masterstroke Queen Experience is a local tribute to Queen and seeing them live is pretty epic. Fronted by singer Sean Slaughter ,who does a terrific Freddie Mercury, the band does right by Queen’s sound. The show is called the Beezlebub Costume Ball, with good reason: It celebrates the 50th anniversary of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The song was released on Halloween in 1975 as the lead single of Queen’s “A Night at the Opera” album. Be ready for the sing-along of the year.

Space Halloween

8 p.m. Oct. 31. Space, 538 Congress St., Portland, $15 in advance, $20 at the door. space538.org.

Since 2008, Space has held tremendous Halloween parties. All feature local musician supergroups performing as famous bands. I’ve gone a few times and it’s always a blast. Through the years, bands have performed as Blondie, The Clash, Portishead, Talking Heads, The Kinks, Bikini Kill and dozens of others. It’s a true Portland Halloween tradition.

The four bands being paid homage this year are Green Day, Death Cab for Cutie, Kate Bush and Blue Öyster Cult. You had better believe we’re gonna need more cowbell.

Heavy Halloween: A Breakaway Takeover

8 p.m. Oct. 31. The Dance Hall, 7 Walker St., Kittery, $15, $10 students. thedancehallkittery.com.

For a Halloween night of live music that you can really sink your fangs into, consider a show in Kittery. Breakaway Cafe in Dover, New Hampshire, used to host heavy rock shows on Saturday nights until they were shut down, but Breakaway still presents heavy music shows about four times a year at The Dance Hall. Halloween is one of those nights, and the lineup of Maine and New Hampshire-based bands is ear-splittingly great. Stab will be teaming up with New Hampshire’s Zinc to play the music of Hatebreed. Selflove will slay with the music of Motorhead. Prefrontal Cortex will be covering Crossed Out and Agenbite Misery will tackle the songs of Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard and Sleep. Be sure your costume includes ear plugs.
