In Jim Fossel’s recent column on Question 1, he again shows his talent for making distasteful right-wing policies seem palatable. As he skillfully argues that there is nothing to fear about the upcoming referendum, he pierces his veil of reasonableness when he tells us that a vague “they” could have been more draconian in further restricting voting procedures.
In an adjacent op-ed (“Dark money clouds circle Maine’s voter ID question“), Maurice Cunningham clearly demonstrates that “they” are not us, the citizens of Maine. Rather, “they” are wealthy right-wing ideologues who attempt to hide behind the screen of dark money.
Mr. Fossel urges us to support a proposed remedy for ills that do not exist. The smokescreen of voter fraud is just that. It is its own fraud. If “they” are able to succeed, it is we who will suffer the loss.
