ORONO — Max Scott’s goal 32 seconds into overtime was the winner, lifting the University of Maine men’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory Saturday over Colgate to salvage a split of their weekend series at Alfond Arena.
“I liked the effort. It was hard. They’re a good team. When they get a lead, they pack it in. You don’t have a lot of zone time and it’s hard to generate on them,” Maine coach Ben Barr said.
After losing Friday night, 3-2, the Black Bears (3-2-1) spotted the Raiders (2-3-1) a 2-0 lead Saturday. Jack Brandt scored a power-play goal at 10:15 of the first period, then added a second goal at 15:47.
Thomas Freel’s power-play goal at 1:02 of the second period pulled Maine within a goal, and the Black Bears tied it when Justin Poirier converted a long rebound off the back boards for his fifth goal of the season at 2:08 of the third.
The winning goal was produced by the younger brother of Maine’s scoring leader last season, Harrison Scott. Max Scott’s shot glanced off the inside of Colgate goalie Andrew Takacs’ pads and into the net. It was the first Maine goal for Scott, a transfer from Brown.
“That was pretty special. The emotions were definitely very high and I was very proud of that moment,” Brown said. “I’m definitely looking to pop a couple more in as the season goes on.”
Albin Boija made 17 saves for Maine, while Takacs had 31 stops.
