I’m writing to support absentee voting rights in the state of Maine. I urge my neighbors and fellow voters throughout the state to vote “No” on Question 1 on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Universal suffrage is a cornerstone of our democracy. Our laws should not impose artificial barriers to voting. Here are three reasons to vote “No”:

  • If it passes we’d no longer be able to pick up or drop off a ballot for our elderly parent who lives in another town.
  • Your disabled neighbor wouldn’t be able to request a ballot by phone from their town office — even though they’ve done so in previous elections.
  • People who need to work all day on Election Day (e.g., health care workers, direct care workers, delivery drivers) would effectively lose access to absentee voting.

Our elections are safe. We shouldn’t need to bring an ID to vote.
