Two women were arrested in Canada on Friday following an attempted theft and subsequent chase in Houlton, police said.
Houlton Police Officer Sera Smalley responded to Katahdin Trust on North Street around 4:40 p.m. Friday for a report of an attempted theft using a fake passport, Houlton Police Chief Timothy DeLuca said in a statement Wednesday.
Smalley approached the bank and noted a woman exiting the building who was soon identified by people inside as the person involved in the incident, DeLuca said.
As Smalley got back in her cruiser, DeLuca said, the woman crossed the street and ran to a vehicle in a nearby parking lot.
Smalley attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver failed to stop, DeLuca said.
The officer followed the vehicle onto Interstate 95, toward the Canadian border, the chief said.
Per procedure, DeLuca said, the Houlton officer’s pursuit ceased once the vehicle crossed the border, and Royal Canadian Mounted Police took over.
Rachael Kennedy, 37, of Kansas and Rashidah Henry, 31, of Georgia were later arrested by Canadian police in connection, DeLuca said.
Both were transported back to Maine and are being held at the Aroostook County Jail, DeLuca said.
Kennedy was charged with forgery and criminal attempted theft, while Henry was charged with eluding an officer, criminal conspiracy, driving to endanger and operating without a license, the chief said.
Both have outstanding warrants in their respective states related to theft and fraud, DeLuca said.
The incident is still under investigation.
