“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” — Dr. Seuss, “The Lorax”

I was thrilled to see the Age Friendly communities across Maine highlighted in your Oct. 16 article “Older Mainers stay connected with help from community groups.” As the article stated, Age Friendly organizations serve as a crucial resource for older Mainers across the state by providing transportation, Lunch & Learn events, coffee hours, sand bucket programs and many other services.

One especially important element, which I don’t think was emphasized enough in the article, is the extent to which these organizations depend on volunteers. Were it not for the dedication of hundreds of volunteers who generously contribute their time and energy these programs would
not survive.

I am certain that every Age Friendly group across the state of Maine would welcome additional volunteers to help keep their programs running — I know that Age Friendly Biddeford certainly would.

As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”
