On that sunny No Kings rally day in my hometown, I held my “NO KINGS” sign high, with enthusiasm and hope. I was inspired by the signs and smiles of fellow Mainers. I returned to my home, placed the sign in the corner and wondered, “What should I do with it? Throw it away? But it took an hour to make, and it looks really nice.”
Then, because I am a storyteller, I realized that the sign served its purpose for the rally, but now it will become an heirloom. It is an heirloom to pass on to my children, grandchildren, great-grands, nieces, nephews and cousins.
On the back of it I wrote the story of current chaotic governance, and why I felt it was important to take my senior citizen self to that rally today with this sign. After writing my story on the sign, I put it in a safe place where I know my family will find it. It will continue to tell the story of who I am and what I believe after I leave this Earth.
I feel good about participating in the rally and recording the story for future generations. I invite you, my fellow Mainers, to do the same.
