This letter is a plea to local communities and businesses to stop using the corporate, for-profit, information gathering, Facebook, to be their sole means of announcing local events. I do not want to go to a town’s website to be redirected to Facebook for further information about local recreation or entertainment opportunities.
I am not a Facebook member, and choose not to be. I do not want my data to be used to further Facebook’s profits and influence. When I get redirected to a Facebook page, I am denied access unless I agree to join. This is coercive behavior.
If I want to go to Naples’ Rocktoberfest, or take swimming lessons in Casco, or play basketball in Harrison, I would appreciate it if all of these communities allowed me to read about these opportunities on their own webpages. When Pleasant Mountain is opening for the season, staff should let me know about it on their own website.
