I’m encouraged by Graham Platner’s willingness to listen to people who are frustrated and angry about the current direction of our country. When recently asked about immigration, Platner said, “The answer to that is not shame; the answer to that is not anger. The answer to that is empathy and compassion.”

That simple statement says a lot about the kind of leadership Maine needs right now. Rather than dividing people, Platner reminds us that empathy and understanding help us solve problems together. He recognizes that anger often comes from feeling unheard, and that we can’t rebuild trust without first listening to one another without judgment.

Now, when too many politicians thrive on partisanship, it’s refreshing to see a candidate who chooses compassion instead. Maine deserves leaders like Graham Platner — grounded, respectful and ready to listen.
