All-time series: Maine and Hampton have met just twice, with each team winning at the other’s field. Hampton won the last meeting, 42-35, late in the 2023 season.

Key stat: Maine leads the Coastal Athletic Association in defense, allowing 313.2 yards per game.

Outlook: The Black Bears have scored at least 28 points in four of the last five victories, but it’s the emergence of the defense that has carried the team. Maine has been particularly stout against the run, allowing a league-low 123 yards per game. Maine’s run defense was outstanding last week, holding Stony Brook’s strong rushing attack to 3 yards in a 28-21 win. Linebacker Latrell Couchman was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week after making seven tackles, with 2 1/2 tackles for a loss and two sacks. Couchman and the defense face a challenge against the Pirates, who average 176 rushing yards per game. Freshman Jah’Kei Chavis leads Hampton’s balanced running game with 341 yards and three touchdowns. While Hampton is last in the conference in passing, averaging 154 yards per game, quarterback Braden Davis threw for 242 yards in last week’s loss to Monmouth.

Maine’s passing game continues to improve. Carter Peevy has 1,659 passing yards, and his 11 touchdown passes have gone to eight receivers. That’s helped the Black Bears climb to sixth in the conference in total yards per game (362). Scott Woods, a grad transfer from Harvard, has become Peevy’s favorite target, with 43 catches for 484 yards and three touchdowns. Sincere Baines (597 yards rushing) and Rashawn Marshall (554 yards rushing) give the Black Bears a two-headed ground attack. Each averages more than five yards per carry. Linebacker Harold O’Neal leads Hampton’s defense and is second in the conference with 90 tackles.

Of note: At 4-1 in the conference, Maine still has a shot to win the CAA title. The Black Bears are a game behind Rhode Island and Monmouth, both 5-0. Maine hosts Rhode Island on Nov. 15, then closes the regular season at rival UNH on Nov. 22. Sweeping the final three games of the regular season would give the Black Bears an 8-4 record, which would put them in good shape to earn at least an at-large bid to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. … Hampton enters the game with nine consecutive conference losses dating to last season. The last CAA win was over Elon on Oct. 26, 2024. … Maine’s defense is ranked 18th in FCS in yards per game.
