BREWER — Bangor Christian girls soccer coach Scott Durost instructs his backline each game to “build a wall.”
The wall was impenetrable once again Saturday, as the Patriots sank Wisdom 3-0 in the 8-player state title game at Brewer High School.
“I just felt like everyone was so close,” said senior Lyndsie Durost, whose team finished 18-0. “Everyone was willing to work and be hard and push each other every day, and that makes a winning team.”
Bangor Christian shut out all four of its postseason opponents.
“So we have gone 18 games now. I think we’ve given up eight goals all year,” Durost said. “We pitched a perfect shutout in the playoffs, the regionals, and the championship. … So that’s a testament to their hard work back there, their communication. They do well sliding together and talking together.”
When Wisdom did get past the Patriots’ defense, goalie Addison Tucker was there to shut down the attack. She finished with four saves.
Mary Allen, who scored all three goals for Bangor Christian, said the defense doesn’t get the credit it deserves.
“I always say the defense is the most underrated part of the team,” Allen said.
Three of the eight goals Bangor Christian (18-0) gave up this season came in its second regular-season meeting with Wisdom (16-3) on Oct. 10, which the Patriots won, 4-3. They shut out the Pioneers, 5-0, in the teams’ first matchup, on Sept. 19.
Allen struck twice in the first half Saturday in similar fashion, long runs and low shots past Pioneers goalie Mikayl Michaud (10 saves). Her first goal came in the 11th minute and the second in the final seconds of the half.
“It feels awesome, but I can’t take all the credit,” Allen said. “It’s from my teammates setting me up and just making those goals possible.”
Allen scored her final goal in the final minute of the game, just a few minutes after she tried to set up her sister Annie Allen for a goal.
Mary Allen scored seven goals combined in the regional final and state final. Saturday’s hat trick followed a four-goal performance in the South final against Richmond.
