SKOWHEGAN — Police Monday arrested a Waterville man suspected in robberies of two Skowhegan businesses the night before.
David Alvarez, 40, is charged with two Class A counts of robbery, one Class D count of assault, one Class D count of criminal mischief, one Class D count of obstructing report of a crime and 14 Class D counts of violation of condition of release, Chief David Bucknam of the Skowhegan Police Department said in a statement Monday.
Alvarez was being held at the Somerset County Jail in Madison without bail as of Monday evening, according to jail records.
The first robbery Sunday was reported around 7 p.m. at George’s Banana Stand, a grocery store on North Avenue, Bucknam said. The second was reported around 9 p.m. at the McDonald’s fast food restaurant on Madison Avenue.
An investigation that continued through Monday led Skowhegan police Detective Sgt. Kelly Hooper and Officer Shane Lay to arrest Alvarez.
The violation of conditions of release charges stem from seven sets of bail conditions, Bucknam said, calling that “concerning” and adding it is part of an ongoing investigation.
Bucknam declined to say how much money police believe Alvarez took from either business. Nobody was injured, he said.
As he was arrested Monday, Alvarez would be expected to make an in-custody initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon in Skowhegan. A judge at that appearance would inform him of the charges, consider bail and conditions of release and appoint an attorney, if deemed necessary. Alvarez would not be asked to enter pleas at that time as the robbery charges are felony-level; prosecutors must first present the case to a grand jury to seek an indictment.
