A fire Wednesday afternoon in Smithfield damaged a garage, but firefighters were able to stop it from spreading to the attached home, the town’s fire chief said.

The garage’s structure was left standing after firefighters extinguished the blaze, and there was little damage to the home, Chief Louis Batista of the Smithfield Fire Department said Thursday.

The fire was reported around 3:30 p.m. at 1191 East Pond Road, Batista said, although he was unsure if that was the actual address of the home or an adjacent property. Crews cleared the scene by 6 p.m.

Fire officials are unsure of the cause but believe it could have been sparked by an electrical issue, Batista said. No further investigation by the Office of State Fire Marshal is expected.

Nobody was home when the fire started, and no one was injured, according to Batista.

Firefighters from departments in Norridgewock, Oakland, Sidney and Skowhegan assisted Smithfield’s firefighters, the chief said. Further mutual aid coming from Rome, Belgrade and Waterville was canceled while they were en route.
