It will rain and snow in Maine this weekend — that much seems clear to forecasters.

But how much, and where exactly, is still to be determined.

“Sunday into Monday, there will probably be accumulating snow across the northern part of the state,” said Chris Norcross, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Caribou.

On Thursday morning, the Caribou office projected between one-half inch and 2 inches in some areas, but Norcross said on Thursday night that it was still too early to provide a more narrow forecast.

“There is some uncertainty about exactly how intense this storm is, the track and timing,” he said.

As of Thursday night, Norcross said it was looking like the Downeast region would get the least snow in his office’s coverage area.

Further south, Mainers can expect mostly rain.

“We have a system coming in Saturday night and Sunday,” Michael Clair, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Gray, said on Thursday night. “At this point, it looks like mostly rain along the coast.”

But the hills and mountains are projected to get some snow, and “a bit of a wintry mix,” he said.

“It’s still a little early, but in the mountains it looks like as much as a few inches worth of snow,” Clair said. “Down towards the coast, maybe around a half inch of rain.”
