A Vassalboro man who reportedly broke into a home late Thursday in Fairfield and led police on a chase into Waterville before being arrested faces multiple charges.

Joel Williams, 27, remained behind bars Friday at Somerset County Jail in East Madison where a spokesman there said bail for him had been denied.

Just after 9:20 p.m. Thursday, Maine State Police, as well as officers from the Fairfield and Waterville police departments, responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a home on Dyer Court in Fairfield. Dyer Court is located off Water Street in Fairfield, between upper Main Street and the Kennebec River.

Those reporting the incident said an armed male who appeared to be under the influence of drugs had forced his way into the home and was acting erratically and damaging property, according to Shannon Moss, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

State troopers arrived first at the scene and saw a male flee the residence and get into a black Ford sedan, Moss said Friday in an email.

“The suspect did not comply with the trooper’s commands and began yelling out the window as he backed up the street and fled,” Moss said. “A trooper caught up to the vehicle, but the operator failed to stop. A motor vehicle pursuit ensued through Waterville, ending when the suspect’s vehicle struck a guardrail on Water Street. “

The sedan came to a stop, the operator fled on foot and a short time later, he was taken into custody without incident, Moss said. No injuries were reported.

Williams was charged with burglary, criminal mischief, terrorizing, eluding an officer, driving to endanger, OUI drugs, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, criminal speed, reckless conduct, refusing to submit to arrest or detention and violating conditions of release.
