Rex Crommett Nelson

CANAAN – Rex Crommett Nelson, 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Skowhegan on Nov. 12, 2025. Born on Feb. 14, 1931, in Canaan, Rex was the son of Bertram and Ethelyn (Crommett) Nelson.

Rex worked many jobs throughout his life, spending most of his career at Keyes Fibre in Waterville. A talented craftsman, he took great pride in building his own log cabin, cutting the logs from his land and using work horses to haul them out. His creativity was evident in the unique touches throughout his home, which visitors admired for hours.

A proud Korean War veteran, Rex served his country from 1953 to 1955. One of the highlights of his later years was participating in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., at the age of 87 with his daughter, Rhonda.

Rex enjoyed hunting in his younger years, sharing many memorable days with his father, brothers, and son. He remained in his home until the end, thanks to the devoted care of his daughter, Wendy, and two special caregivers Jonie Christoph and Brenda Hazelton, who treated Rex like their own “Dad.”

He was predeceased by his parents; his son, Stanley Rex Nelson; his beloved dog, Cowaha; and lifelong friend from grammar school, Robert Hamilton; special friends Jeffrey Pomerleau, Raymond Gabree and John (A-Z) Achramowicz.

Rex is survived by his daughters Deborah LaPlante and husband Dick, Rhonda Rugan and special companion

Roger Theriault, Wendy Robinson and special companion Tony Geroux, and Melanie Adams and husband Daniel. He also leaves behind grandchildren Lindsey Pinkham and husband Ron, and Rhiannon LaPlante-Ogden and husband Hunter; great-grandchild, Trenton Pinkham; the mother of his children, Theresa Nichols; siblings Royden Nelson, Parker (Pat) Nelson, Paul Nelson, and Goldie (Allen) Clifford; several nieces and nephews; and a very special lady, Madeline Anderson, along with her children.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Somerset Valley Remembrance Center, 19 Washburn Lane, Skowhegan. A funeral service with a luncheon will follow on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. at the same location and interment at Fairview Cemetery in Canaan following immediately after.
