Soweto Gospel Choir: Peace

Soweto Gospel Choir counts Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey among its fans. The choir has won multiple Grammy and Emmy Awards, and will be performing an evening of South African freedom songs, traditional spirituals and classic tunes mixed in with ones by Aretha Franklin, Harry Belafonte, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush and Leonard Cohen.

Expect to be moved to happy tears during a performance rich with lush harmonies, colorful costumes and immense spirit.

The 44th Asbury Short Film Concert

New York City’s longest-running short film exhibition and touring show is called Asbury Shorts USA, and it will be in Fryeburg on Friday. You’ll see past award-winners, along with new festival honorees. For two hours, attendees will be immersed in short film comedy, drama and animation, along with a few surprises. Oscar-nominated director Jason Reitman says it’s the best short film show he’s ever experienced.

‘The Constituent’ and ‘On Golden Pond’

In 1982, Ernest Thompson won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for the drama “On Golden Pond,” a film based on his stage play. Thompson will be in Maine for a screening of “On Golden Pond,” along with his new short film “The Constituent.” The latter features the song “Cross the Bridge,” co-written by Maine musician Griffin William Sherry, who will likely be there to perform it. The evening also includes a Q&A session.

Thompson has written 10 movies, 37 plays, two novels and 250 songs. His many collaborators include Katharine Hepburn, Henry and Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Shirley MacLaine, Jeff Daniels, Winona Ryder and Carly Simon.

Nor’ Geekster will feature dozens of vendors selling exclusively handmade items including jewelry, candles, soaps, 3D prints, games, crocheted toys, stickers and much more. Cosplay costumes welcome.

Blank Space: The Taylor Swift Experience

Taylor Swift isn’t on tour at the moment, but Swifties can still hear her songs live. Blank Space: The Taylor Swift Experience is a Los Angeles-based Swift tribute act, fronted by singer Olivia Mojica. You’ll hear her belt out the hits, backed by a full band and dancers. Mojica is a convincing Swift, so get ready to be dazzled as you sing along with tunes from Swift’s many musical eras. Cardigans optional.

Sparks The Rescue

Maine-based rock band Sparks the Rescue is thrilled to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a headlining show at the State Theatre. In its 2010 heyday, Sparks The Rescue was part of the Vans Warped Tour music festival. Popular tunes include “We Love Like Vampires” “My Heart Radio” and a cover of Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now.” The band also gives a nod to a historic moment in Maine history with “Ice Storm of ’98.” Too Late the Hero and Isles open the show.
