She said the original plan was to put a support around the tower and repair it in place. But they found the tower's structural integrity was worse than expected, the walls were so deteriorated that the work couldn't be done safely. So the spire and bell were removed while the tower was repaired. "It was supposed to be a million dollar project. We don't have final numbers on the additional work because the design of the spire and what the materials will cost."
They're estimating it will be an additional $500,000 to $600,000 and they'll need to raise about another $400,000 to replace the spire.
