The Oct. 31 edition of the Times Record carried the article “How those in bondage found their freedom in the Midcoast,” by Lori-Suzanne Dell.
Unfortunately, it wrongly states that 230 acres “around” Heuston Burying Ground have been preserved as a portion of “Francis and Mehitable Heuston Park.” The two places are not one and the same.
The burying ground and nearby church are privately owned. The public park is actually some distance away, on the opposite side of the road, and consists of former Navy property combined with adjacent land donated by the Crooker family.
Anyone interested in learning more about the state’s rich Black heritage might like to read “Maine’s Visible Black History,” which is available in most of Maine’s public libraries.
