The Clinton Police Department located the driver in Tuesday’s fatal U-Haul crash after he allegedly fled the scene, the department said in a news release on Thursday.

Tyler Hewitt, 31, of Presque Isle, was charged with aggravated trafficking of scheduled drugs, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, and operating after suspension.

Tuesday’s crash occurred about 7 a.m. on Interstate 95 in Clinton when Hewitt veered off the northbound lanes near mile marker 138, entered the median ditch area and went airborne, striking a tree. When investigators arrived at the scene, they found John Perkins, 38, of Hampden in the passenger seat, who was declared dead moments later.

Hewitt fled the scene and was not seen until noon Thursday when Clinton police received a call from a Capital Police Officer who spotted a male fitting the description of the suspect. He was spotted on Hill Road near Horseback Road.

Clinton police searched the area for two hours but did not find anyone, the release said.

The department received another call about 4 p.m. reporting a male walking south on I-95. Two officers detained the male safely without injury.

The man matched the description of Hewitt, including his facial injuries. He was brought to the hospital for evaluation.

Hewitt was driving on a suspended license when the crash occurred.
