The 28-point proposed peace plan to end the Ukraine-Russia war will not work. Despite President Trump’s desire to find a resolution to the ongoing war, this is not how peace plans between two warring countries are made or resolved.
While the U.S. and Western European nations can serve as mediators, the plan must be negotiated between representatives from Ukraine and Russia at the same table. The proposed plan is essentially a giveaway to Russia, the aggressor, which would be rewarded with 20% of Ukrainian territory, no foreign troops on Ukrainian soil, no NATO membership and other elements favorable to Russia.
Given his troubled history with President Zelenskyy, I remain doubtful that President Trump could serve as a non-biased mediator for any peace plan. My hopes are for the European leaders to broker a deal to get Ukraine and Russia to the peace table to negotiate a reasonable ending to the war. An ending that probably will not please both sides.
