UMaine’s bid for its first men’s basketball victory of the season came up short Saturday afternoon as Longwood University held on for a 65-61 win in Washington, D.C.
The Black Bears (0-8), trailing by two points, had two opportunities to pull ahead in the closing seconds, but Mekhi Gray and TJ Biel missed 3-point attempts. Longwood’s Redd Thompson Jr. then made two free throws to clinch the victory.
Gray led Maine with 16 points. Logan Carey scored 13 points and Ryan Mabrey had 12.
Elijah Tucker and Jaylen Benard paced Longwood (4-4) with 13 points apiece.
